songs are playing in a cold and solitary night of Seoul. It's Christmas
Season, and the Radio DJ said, "One more year is ending. The four
seasons have flown so fast, each season brought its comfort, love and
warmth so that we could share it with others..." The Security Guard is checking the Academy’s classrooms and locking the doors. The building became darker. DJ: But in our midst there're always people who are lost, and there are others who stood alone in the chilling wind of the night. YS is standing outside the Academy, listening. Lights are turned off. The door is locked. DJ: (A carol song is starting.) We dedicate this song to all those who are lost in the darkness... The Guard saw YS standing outside and opened the door. Guard: (Opening his eyes real big.) Wow, look who's here! Where have you been? Do you know how worried I was? YS: ... Guard: Can you come here just like that? What if those gangsters come back? YS: I'm sorry... (Went in, in deep meditation.) ******Flash back SungJae approaches YS, and shows him the picture. SJae: Are you the one who put this picture on my desk? (YS nods.) Can I know who you are? YS: She is my mother. (Looking up.) I told myself that when I find the man in that picture I would ask him, "Are you... my father?" SJae: ... ! (Pause.) No, it is true that I've loved your mother. She was very special to me. But no... I'm not your father. ******Prosecutor's Office SJae remembered the incident and walked out. ******At the Bar (night) SJae is seating at the bartenders table, drinking. Madam Chu HaeRan approaches him in a surprised tone. HR: Wow, I can't believe my eyes! (Sarcastically.) What is a man of such high position doing here? The last time I called you, you seemed ashamed to even know me. SJae: I was at an important meeting. (Drinking.) HR: (Sharing the drink.) Do still you remember SoonIm? It was painful to see how much she loved you. SJae: She had a son. He grew up to be a fine young man. Whose son is he? HR: How would I know that? She was a very strong-headed woman, you know. I don't think she ever told anyone. SJae: Even if she didn't tell you, you could at least guess! Whose son is he? Come on, you destroyed her by selling her away. How much did you get for that? HR: I wonder who really destroyed her. Before I sold her, you abandoned her. SJae: (Painfully.) Yes, we both destroyed her. Now tell me who is the father. HR: I don't know, she has never told me. For real... (Pause.) Do you really want to know? ******Basement of the Academy YS is boxing. Suddenly, he heard the phone ringing. It's Picko, carrying HJ's phone tied over his neck. YS smiles and picks up the phone, "Hello" HJ: (On a pay phone.) Hearing your voice, I could tell you're still alive. *******Noodle House HJ and YS are seated around a table, having a bowl of ramyon each. HJ is just watching YS's face as he eats. YS: (While eating, without looking at her.) Do you always stare at people like that? HJ: I've been thinking about it for a couple of days already, but I couldn't figure it out. What could it be? YS: (Finished the last drop of his bowl.) Why did you order if you are not eating? HJ: You ordered without asking me. Do you want it? YS: Do you know what's worse than being just poor? It's to be poor and to have a big stomach. (Standing up and paying for the food.) HJ: You don't look evil... but well, evil people don't always show it. YS: I wouldn't be able to repay you for the favour with just a cup of ramyon. Would you like some coffee? ********Basement of Academy Drinking coffee. YS is drinking from a tin cup, whilst HJ uses a small mug. HJ: (Looking at the coffee mug.) To be a devil in disguise, the coffee mug is too boring. (YS just smiles.) OK, can I ask you at least this? Is it safe for you to stay here? YS: You mean if they won't come back? There are two things gangsters are most afraid of: to be called for military service, or to be caught by prosecutors and cops. No, they won't come back. HJ: (Still looking at his face.) What about you? (YS looks at her inquisitively.) Don't you belong to that category? Guard: (Voice.) YoSuk, are you there? (Entering.) I see you have a guest. The owner wants to know how did the Police University entrance exam go. (HJ looks at the wall. Next to Han SoonIm's poster, there's a certificate with YS's picture in police uniform and his name.) YS: The results won't be posted until this weekend. HJ: (Looking at her watch.) I must go now. Good night. (Turning back.) And good luck with your entrance exam! Guard: (Whispering, as HJ leaves.) He also wants to know what happened last time. I almost got a heart attack trying to explain to him how we were suddenly surrounded by gangsters. *******Police Lab Dr. Hong is showing X-rays of the murdered victim, where the wounds (done through the belts) looked much like JaeSik's style (& knife). Both the doctor and officer Yoo looked at SungJae. They hoped that they have found proof to incriminate MyungSuk. SJae: It's too weak as a piece evidence. Too circumstantial. *******Factory Warehouse MyungSuk and his men are walking down the dark corridors. A man opens one of the many piled-up boxes with his knife and shows MS a bottle of liquor. MS approves. *******Prosecutor's Office Ki SunJae, officer Yoo, and others are all busy looking at documents and searching through the computers. They could feel that the evidence is at the tip of their fingers... *******MyungSuk's Room MS is getting a massage. Phone rings and he picks up. After listening, he stands up. He hangs up the phone. Talking to himself, "So you want to trap me, you Son of a #$^!" ******Town's Billard House DogN, MaeJu and others are playing pool. SuHwa comes with courage and bows to them. She has a question to ask. DogN: What...? What do you want to know? SH: You saw him. Tell me how he's doing. DogN: Do you want to die? MJ: Forget him, he has another girl. A prosecutor's daughter. Real pretty, not a country girl like you. KangSoo: (Coming in, pointing at SH.) Who is she? DogN: YoSuk's girl. Remember? KS: Really? (Looking lustfully.) She's much prettier than I remember. *******Police University Posting Board Final results are posted. YS walks towards the board. Looking down the list of acceptees, he found his name. People around him are celebrating and screaming loudly, embracing each other. YS smiled. That is a lonely smile. *******Restaurant Cups are raised. Cheers, drink, drink!!! People are congratulating Soongjun for clearing the Bar exam. Sj: I still need to pass the 3rd. exam. InSu: That's easy enough. But Hyung, don't you think you're going too fast, too soon? (To the Prosecutor.) Don't you think so, sir? He didn't have time to experience real life yet. Sj: I'm confident I could handle real life's issues whenever it comes. I'm pretty strong and not easily shaken. Besides, I have you Dad, guiding me all the way. SJae smiles proudly at him. HJ sneaked out, called the Police University to find out the results of the entrance exam. ********Police University At a pay phone, YS called Manbo. Mb is sleeping. He dials SuHwa's # but gives up, remembering the previous incident. Turning around, looks at the University Sign. Whispering, "Mom, I got accepted into college." ********Life Café Musician: (As YS enters.) We're not open yet. (There's instruments on the floor and a couple of musicians tuning them.) YS: I know. Could I try that? (Points at the bass guitar.) Musician: (Looking him over.) Go ahead. YS played and that has impressed the musician. "Do you have experience?" YS: I used to work at a Night Club in my hometown. M: We are currently in need of a bass guitarist. Would you like to play that whenever you have time? YS: (Smiling.) Yes, thank you. *******Hotel Room SangYup is taking a bath, listening to loud music. Footsteps are approaching. Black pants, black shoes, and wearing black leather gloves. The two feet goes inside the room and sees a naked woman, sleeping. The music is turned off. SY: (Screaming from the bath tub.) Why do you turn off the music!! Put it back on! The bathroom door opens up, and the two dark hands push SY's head inside the water, pulling his hair. SY struggles to breath. The head is pulled back up. MyungSuk: You're a dead man by now. SY: Fa...ther. MS: How many times must I tell you to be more careful? Put on your clothes and come out. ********At the Dark Mansion SY has been informed that the prosecutor is behind them. "They know we are responsible for Chansik's death and their looking for hard evidence." SY: Why do we always lose? First grandpa, then you. We're always running from them. MS: Who said that we have always lost? Those prosecutors tried to destroy us so many times by putting us in jail, but we're not dead. We've grown instead. No, we didn’t lose. We won. But whenever there's a storm, we should stay inside. So watch out! (To SY.) Especially you. ********In front of the Academy Building Firemen, people screaming and running, and smoke is coming from the inside of the building. YS ran in and asked the Guard, "What happened?" HJ has been waiting for YS, and is now observing from the distance. Guard: I don't know! I was just boiling water for ramyon, and suddenly... What should I do! (Crying.) The owner is coming over there. What should I tell him???? YS: Sir, just tell him it is my fault. You are not here. Please go! (The guard hesitated, and YS pushed him away.) The owner gets off his car and screamed at YS, "So you finally came to this. You came to bankrupt me!" (Slapped him.) "I don't want to see your face again." *******Basement of Academy Smoky and burned. Half of SoonIm's poster is burnt. YS picked up the remainder of it with his other belongings, to go. Guard: (Crying.) I'm sorry YS. YS: Never mind. I owed you so much anyway. Guard: Do you have a place to go? (YS smiled and left.) *******Outside the Academy HaeJu has been waiting outside. She stands in front of YS hiding a bunch of flowers on her back. YS looked surprised. HJ: What should I do first? Offer my condolences or congratulations? But I guess it's better to congratulate first. Congratulations on your entrance exam!!! (Presents him the bunch of flowers.) YS: (Smiling.) You always get to see me in the worst circumstances possible... (Takes the bunch, picks one and throws away the rest.) HJ: What about these flowers? YS: They're of no use since I can't eat them. Come, I'll take you home. (Started walking.) HJ: Wait up! (Ran after him.) ********Town's Bowling Alley SuHwa: We're closed. (KangSoo and his band come in and start playing.) KangSoo looked at SuHwa and admired. "Pretty girl..." (SH is shaky.) ********In front of Ki SungJae's House YS: (Giving to HJ the one flower he had saved.) Thanks. HJ: Next time, I'll get you something edible. YS: Good night. HJ: How should I call you. We haven't introduced each other yet. YS: Han YoSuk. HJ: HaeJun. I'm Ki HaeJun. (Extended her hands, they shook.) As YS is going, HJ yells, "Do you have anywhere to go?" YS: (Screaming back.) People like me are experts in finding places to stay. HJ: (Calling!) Wait! (Running to him, gives him her beeper.) We should be able to contact each other at least. Call me back whenever you see #333. Ignore the rest. YS: (Looking at the pager.) Does your father know about this? HJ: Does he have to know? YS: If he knew, he wouldn't like it. HJ: Why? YS: It's obvious. Gangsters are after me. Besides, there's no reason we should see each other again. (Gives the pager back to her. Walking away and waving his hand backwards, without looking.) Good night! HJ: But wait... (Soongjun walks towards her.) Sj: What are you doing out here? (Looks at YS's back.) Who is he? HJ: Never mind. *******Inside Ko KangSoo's car KS took SuHwa home. She is tensed. KS gave her his business card. She rejected and ran out of the car. KS laughed. *********Life Café YS: (To the first musician.) You said you didn't have a bass guitarist. I don't need a salary. I just need a place to stay and some food. Musician: You're very funny, you know? There is no salary anyway. But come in! *********Casino Club JaeSik goes inside and found SangYup playing cards with others. JS told everyone to leave. SY is upset and screams, "What are you doing?" JS: This is not the right timing. We should be hiding right now. The Italian women are really pretty. How would you like to go there for the time being? SY: Why do I have to run away? JS: Don't you know? You will be in charge of the entire clan after your father. You are his only son. SY: (Mockingly.) Whose idea is this? Yours? You've grown old, Hyung. You once killed Yamamoto without blinking an eye... I was 12 then, and I saw you. You were great then. But now, you're old. You fear stupid prosecutors. Why should you? We are rich and powerful. If anyone touches us, we will destroy them. All we need to do is to blow up anyone who bothers us. **********Dark Mansion Doctor: (After examining MyungSuk.) Avoid stress at all cause. And quit smoking and drinking. MS: That's enough. I don't have any fatal disease, do I? Dc: (Laughed) You are healthy for your age. MS: That's good then. Just let me know if I will die. JaeSik came in as Doctor left. MS: What is your opinion? JS: You're healthy. MS: No, SY. JS: He's still a boy who's not afraid of the gun. He hasn't been wounded yet. I was thinking, why don't you send him to Sydney? The Jae Mafia over there could train him well. MS: (Outside, walking.) You know he is my only son. If I had another son I wouldn't be this concerned, since I could choose. But there's only one. So don't mention Sydney again. I'll be too anxious if he's so far. ********SungJae's Room Soongjun was searching for a book. He saw the one on the desk and picked it up. A picture fell. It's SoonIm's. He sighed. SungJae came in with a cup of coffee. Sj: (In a hurry.) I'll borrow this book from you. (Tried to leave.) SJae: You won't ask me who she is? Sj: (Turned around.) You've been a good father to us, and of course, a good husband to our diseased mother. The rest is your personal business. SJae: Thank you for saying that. Sj: Last year, I was looking into old cases. In one of the documents, I saw there was some kind of love scandal concerning this actress and a prosecutor whose initial was K.S.J. (SungJae stopped.) Don't worry. It would be strange if you don’t fall for such a pretty lady. Goes out. SJae, alone in the room, is looking at the picture. ********Hospital: Maternity Room (Dream-like.) Han SoonIm gave birth to a child. A baby is crying in its cradle. SI is lying on her bed, sweating. She is angry, "Don't you dare to think that! If this child has one drop of your blood on his, I'd kill him with both my hands." MyungSuk woke up sweating. He was dreaming. *********Inside the Benz limousine MS is watching betrayers being punished from the inside of his car. MS: Do you remember Han SoonIm? JaeSik: Ah... yes, I do. MS: She had a son. Find out where he is and what he's doing. JS: Yes, sir. **********SungJae's Room SungJae remembered his conversation with Madam Chu. Madam's voice: Do you know why she died without telling anyone? Because he is Jang MyungSuk's son. Think about it. She didn't want her son to grow up and end up being imprisoned by you. |
