Papa
Bae Yong Jun + Lee Young Ah = Don’t miss this production

(translated from extracts of "100% Korean Drama", written by Dan Feng)

Cast: Bae Yong Jun, Lee Young Ah, Zheng Zhan, Yin Xun He
Screening time: 1996 KBS production
Recommendation: Narrates the life of a divorced father in a comical but daily manner
Audience: YJ’s fans and young couples

<<Papa>> is a daily comedy. After Yong Jun’s fans turned teary after watching <<WJS>>, they could switch to watch <<Papa>> for a refreshing change. This could also help soothe their pain that arose from <<WJS>>. YJ played a divorced and single father. YJ and Lee Young Ah played a pair of young couple who started to understand each other further after divorce. They reunite in the end.

Xian Jun (played by BYJ) is a university professor from the Arts faculty. He married Shi Ying (played by LYA). Xian Jun wrote a book on his romance and love story. However, he is already divorced then. Although apart, both can’t forget the love.

<<Papa>> narrates the romance of a divorced man who has a child. In demure glasses, Xian Jun exhibited sunshine appeal. This contrasted with Shin Dong Xian’s decisive and devoted charisma in <<Hotelier>>. Comparing with <<WJS>>’s depressing finale, <<Papa>> ended with a good note. This could somewhat soothe YJ’s fans’ pain from the depressing <<WJS>> finale. Zheng Zhan, male lead of <<Mei Wei Guan Xi>>, played Xian Jun’s brother in <<Papa>>.

Lee Young Ah have added some weight, in order to fit into this role. In <<Papa>>, she looked rounder and less attractive. This is far from the "pretty lady" model. In <<Chun Shi>>, she acted as a lady who fell in love with a younger man, and emerged single bravely again. She also acted as a love-smitten Che Min Zhu in <<Yi Jia Siong Di>>. This looks like Lee Young Ah has the potential to portray the emotion icons of a 30-odd lady. She seems to be getting younger by the days. She controls her diet in order to attain her slim figure. She also wears slimming slippers at home.

[A couple watching romantic comedy together]
<<Papa>> has a family flavour. Instead of dramatic contrasts, she has the daily elements incorporated. Refreshing taken, it is also comical. By looking at the female lead’s appeal, you may think this is an older production. I am satisfied with this storyline - when a divorced couple understand each other from afresh. This is a suitable romantic comedy for couples and newly weds.
