Winter Love Song: some thoughts

We have categorised the essay into four sections, namely "scenes", "questions", "similarities", "afterthoughts"

Section I: The scenes

[When we first met …]
The scene they met on the bus, the way Joon Sang stared at Yu Jin, got off the bus, Yu Jin shouted at Joon Sang for not waking her up, walked up to school, Joon Sang decided that he want to stop for a smoke, Yu Jin urges him to move on… (while Joon Sang just stood there)…

[High School]
Being late for school, fell asleep on the bus, ultra-fierce discipline master … that felt so near, maybe years ago, when we are still in school. Even though all of them looked over-aged, the feel is there, and is nice.
Interesting is the "criticisms" Yu Jin said about Joon Sang (when he didn’t turn up for broadcasting session) as well as the Yu Jin’s dance in the broadcast centre. I like that scene: Joon Sang was actually smiling when he heard the criticism. Joon Sang just like to do things when he felt like it. He has his own set of rules.
The high school scenes for these 2 "senior" high school students are well-done.
Nicely shot scenes. Brilliant!

[Back seat]
Joon Yin always takes that back seat. Joon Sang will take the back seat beside her.
Joon Sang, although died, always lives in her mind. She will take that seat on the bus journey to school ever since, if available (suppose so); took that seat after she saw Man Yeong in Marician; took that seat with Joon Sang later (memory recap) etc. Unconsciously, we always eat the things we like, and take the seat we prefer. This should be the case for her too. There was one time Yu Jin consciously did not take the back seat on the bus, when she called Sang Hyuk, while she is on the way to Marician.

[Hold]
While doing her balancing act, Yu Jin never allowed Sang Hyuk to hold her hand. In the first time Joon Sang asked, she placed her hand on his. He is to support her, right from the start. This is very clear: my hand is for the special person to hold, she said.

[Shadow]

Story on the shadow man - Joon Sang (his loneliness). The part that hurt is when he said: finished. A story of 2-3 sentences is really not a story, but that is all he can express...

[Friendliness]
Take one step at a time. Accumulating those footsteps, you'll get friendship - Yu Jin (her friendliness)

[Bicycle ride]
Although Joon Sang was rather unsteady at the start, Yu Jin still seated behind. Yu Jin spread her hands, closed her eyes to feel the air - trust that Joon Sang will catch her. This scene has been added basically for the dramatic effect.
This feels like one of the last scenes from "City of Angels", Meg Ryan spreads her hands to feel the air. That time, she was riding the bicycle.

[Story telling]
Sang Hyuk, "good friends …"
Choi Lim, "handsome prince, pretty princess …"
Their friend changed the scenarios under protests …
Sang Hyuk, "will love princess, will forgive princess, no matter what happens …"
Choi Lim, "ditch her …"
Yu Jin, "realise that the lies are fake …"
Joon Sang, "sorry"
Individuals’ "connections" differ. The "scenarios" reflect individual’s thoughts at that moment in time:
Sang Hyuk : over-generosity
Choi Lim : ditch her
Yu Jin : understanding
Joon Sang : seeking forgiveness

[Lost and Found]
Among the forest, Joon Sang found Yu Jin, in the dark, "I thought I couldn’t find you …"
Their fate is sealed, isn't it?

[Why I came?]
Joon Sang, "If I drag for too long, if I don’t say it now, I am afraid I won’t be able to say this … that is … I am sincere to you"

["Polaris" in the sky]
Joon Sang, "Polaris will not change its place. Polaris is always in the dark night sky. Looking at it, you'll never lose your way." (He held her gloved hand)
At this stage, Joon Sang is the polaris, not later as he is more lost than anyone else...

[Joon Sang with mum (not exact wordings)]
Mum asked, "Why you wanted to stay in this school?"
Joon Sang said, "This is where you met dad"
Mum said, "This is not the way to talk to mum"
Joon Sang said, "Who am I then?"

[First snow by the pond]
Yu Jin, saw the snow fall, went to the lake...
Joon Sang said, "I have a date, by the lake, with someone when the first snow fall."
First snow, snow fight, snow volleyball, … most beautifully done ...

[Your "favourites"]
Yu Jin asked Joon Sang about his favourites:
Colour – White
Season – Winter
Food – all (fried new year cake)
Animal - Man (but who?)
{Relating these "favourites" to a later scene, where Yu Jin asked Man Yeong, "What are your favourites? White colour? Winter? …"}
Joon Sang asked Yu Jin about her favourites:
Flower – white rose
Animal – dog
Man – (but who?)
Their answer for "man" will be known on 31 Dec. Pity …

["First time"s]
On knowing Joon Sang, there are many "first time"s for Yu Jin:
1) climb the wall
2) skipped class
3) hold a male’s hand
4) clean the school’s backyard …
Joon Sang’s "first time"s after knowing Yu Jin:
1) hold her hand
2) ask her out for a movie

["Returning"]
On the way out of town, Joon Sang found the gloves in his pocket, remembering that he has a date with Yu Jin, insisted on rushing back, and met the accident. Promises are not supposed to be broken, for whatever reasons...

["First time" – the piano piece]
Initially : Listening to Joon Sang play "first time". Yu Jin prefers the version played by Joon Sang, not the version by the record. That explained the additional sadness she felt after listening to Joon Sang’s cassette (after he "died")
During the "funeral" : they burnt paper. The surface of the pond is frozen. Sky is gloomy, just like the sad atmosphere. Cold wind. Frozen. Time stopped. Hope this is still yesterday … Choi Lim (to Yu Jin), "you killed him!"
After the funeral : Yu Jin received and listened to Joon Sang's cassette, played it, listened to Joon Sang, keep rolling "first time". She cried, finally cried. Can’t accept Joon Sang's death but have to.
He was there just yesterday. He isn't here now. He isn’t coming back forever. This is really really depressing …

[Why Yu Jin cannot forget Joon Sang?]
1) He was taken away from her very suddenly
2) He was killed in the accident because of her (on the way to meet her)

[Ten years later …]
After ten years, Yu Jin is bright, cheerful and keeping a strong front. She has in fact tuned down a lot since high school, in particularly, the cheerful part.
Sang Hyuk is there for her, thus accepting him but that doesn’t feel like love. Joon Sang lives in her mind. She kept him there. Remember in pain. Missing someone really hurts. For her, it has been inbulit into herself. I admire her strength.
Have you made a puzzle before? Each piece of puzzle has its location and certain orientation. If the piece should be in position (x10, y10), then it can’t be forced somewhere else. When placed correctly, each piece will fit into the "holes" and complete the picture (puzzle). In a way, Joon Sang has been the missing piece of puzzle in Yu Jin’s life and her life puzzle can only be filled by that specific piece. Sang Hyuk is never that right piece.
She saw Joon Sang on the way to her engagement ceremony. She saw Joon Sang (alike) walking and feeling the first snow. Important thing is he is alive! She gave chase, and lost track of time. That gave us a feeling that she has not only lost track of time. She has clearly lost herself too. Lost, seen, found, and lost again! She didn’t find him. Her body gave way - she fainted.
Right after Sang Hyuk and Yu Jin's private engagement party at the courtyard outside... At the school broadcasting centre, Jon Yin saw Lee Man Yeong, who appeared as Choi Lim's boyfriend. The shock and unbelief is written all over her face. Yu Jin, totally frozen: I was looking all over for him on the streets, then, suddenly, he is in front of me... Choi Lim is there to parade Man Yeong - "See, I got to him first". That is not an intelligent move.
Yu Jin wanted to know, wanted to find out … has she been so determined towards Sang Hyuk? Never, as he is never that piece of puzzle that she is looking for.

[Polaris – the name of the company]
Via looking at the name … isn’t the memory obvious?

[Puzzle]
Picking a piece of puzzle at the staircase … and placing it into the "hole" in a big puzzle … and seeing an alive and breathing Joon Sang smiling at her … that is traumatising!
We like this scene - you are the missing piece of puzzle in my life. Simply magical!
Later, I realised another meaning for it - piecing bits of pieces of my memory together … it fills up and forms the puzzle of life.

[Coat]
Man Yeong needs others to hold the project plans for him. However, he ran back to his jeep to get the green coat for Yu Jin (he is quite interested and curious about her, ever since she left in tears from his office). He is quite particular about work, but he allowed Polaris to do the jobs after meeting her (no reasons given).
Man Yeong could be leading her on here. Clever as he, he knows that Yu Jin is interested in him, and it should a nice feeling to get the attention of such a beautiful girl.

Yu Jin was taking photos during the site visit at the ski resort. She saw Man Yeong talking, face animated, and she took many shots of him. She saw him smoking. Who Yu Jin saw is Joon Sang, even the way he lights up the cigarette is the same. Joon Sang is all in her mind. She took Man Yeong as Joon Sang.

[Reasons]
Yu Jin said before, "Missing someone does not need a reason"
Yu Jin can say many convenient reasons (to tell others and also convince herself) why Sang Hyuk is her fiance. However, she can't locate clear reasons for liking Joon Sang and why she misses Joon Sang for so long.

[The best home]
Yu Jin, "It doesn’t matter where we stay. To a couple, each other's heart is the best home of all". Joon Sang is in her heart.

[In the deep snow versus shoes]
A decade ago, in the deep snow, Yu Jin has traced Joon Sang’s steps. Now, in the deep snow, Yu Jin traces/follows Man Yeong's steps. She wants to remember him. This is a painful scene but that is all she could do.
Joon Sang put on her shoes for her in high school.
Man Yeong place her wet shoes near the stove.
Man Yeong's flashback at the airport.
Joon Sang put her wedding shoe on the floor, for her.
While she traced his steps, he put on her shoes for her.

[Confession Game (spin the bottle)]
The bottle turns. Man Yeong is around. Yu Jin is supposed to talk about her first love. She can’t confess that that is Sang Hyuk, because that isn't.
The most painful part is that Man Yeong said something like: she has a lot of first loves, and that is from the person she has been thinking day in day out for 10 years. Before that point, she was not drinking much. After she heard that, she took the bottle/glass up and drank one after another. She drank although she can't drink. Everyone left. She still drinks. Man Yeong sent her home but don’t know where she stays. She kept asking if he likes white colour, winter etc (recall your "favourites"?). Joon Sang has never left her mind.
He sent her back to his hotel room and placed her on the sofa. He took off his glasses. Drunk, she mistook him as Joon Sang, "Joon Sang, Joon Sang …" followed by love confessions released via strong emotions that are trapped within her for ten years. He broke her bubble. She left in tears.
That hurts really badly (from "no hope" to "hope" to "dashed hope").

[Quarrel]
Man Yeong, "The best present for a died man is to forget him"
Yu Jin, "He was breathing beside you. One day, suddenly, he disappeared. There is more than just one person less in the world. That kind of pain, do you understand?" {Till now, you haven’t really love anyone? Other things remain status quo, the feeling of losing someone, how that feels, do you understand?}
We don’t agree with Man Yeong. Although the person is not there physically, the mind will remember.
Agree with Yu Jin that the more you wanted/hope to forget, the harder it is to do so. The point here is - she really has no reason to forget.

[Tarot Cards – "Wheel of Fortune" card]
Man Yeong chose this card. Yu Jin also chose this card. She got the card she chose as a present.
As far as I know, a set of tarot cards is a personal set of cards. To be accurate in the prediction, you have to wrap it in purple silk and sleep with it. Thus, it is unlikely that a devoted card reader will give a card (then it'll be an incomplete set already) to others. If it is taken as accident, then that is another matter.

[Mishap]
Man Yeong was lost in thoughts while holding the "wheel of fortune" card, which is dropped from Yu Jin's pocket. She pushed him away from the falling timber pieces. That reaction is instinctive. As Man Yeong is Joon Sang, a guy she misses for so long: how can she let anything happen to him?
Sang Hyuk can still stand this - well, he is too noble and out of the world.

[Let's start again]
Yu Jin, "There is no need for forgiveness in misunderstandings"
"I am Man Yeong." "I am Yu Jin." Man Yeong and Yu Joon shook hands, introduced themselves, to start again. It is pretty nice.

[By the pond]
Man Yeong sent Yu Jin to and fro her mother's place. He took her to the pond. When he stared at her, she saw so much Joon Sang in Man Yeong. Her heart went to him and … in order to hide again, she uses the cap of the coat. She remembers Joon Sang too much, too long, too well, too vivid ...
Man Yeong, looking at the beautiful pond, said to Yu Jin, "With a locked heart, you only see the sadness. You can’t love this way."
This statement, we agree with Man Yeong. To be able to forget is a bless. To a Man Yeong who has no prior memory/past burden, it is easier to put that in words. However, to put it into practice, in our humble opinion, is really hard.[Man Yeong playing the piano]
At the skiing site, at the store, Man Yeong saw his senior playing with the piano. Later, Man Yeong touched the keys … used his right hand … tried a few notes … (smiled) … added his left hand … and the piece came to "alive"! Man Yeong's face glowed instantly, "Senior … I feel like a genius!" {I didn’t know I could play the piano!}
This is a very cute scene.

[Winter house]
Yu Jin tried to resist Man Yeong. She found him asleep on the chair. She removed his glasses. Who she hopes, wants to see is still Joon Sang. He woke up. (His eyes can really talk here. From "sleep" to "awake" to "realisation" that his glasses are gone.)
Man Yeong, "What do you see in the died man? How long do you have to Yeong on to him?" (Later, I realised that the died man is himself. Really strange feelings)
Yu Jin, "Why? Why do you have to treat me like this? Why?"
Man Yeong, "… Because I like you … I love you ..."
She dashed out. He waited. Then dashed out, searching frantically in the snow storm. He came back, the look of absolute relief on his face, when he saw her in the safe and asleep in warm room. (I want to emphasise - "absolute relief")

["Do you love me?"]
Later, Man Yeong asked, "Do you love me?" Without Sang Hyuk, she finally confessed, "No one can replace Joon Sang."

[Your smile]
Man Yeong to Yu Jin (well, I believe he hasn’t said such things before), "Don’t be pressurised by my love. I'll send you to the coach station" before handing the coach ticket to her, playfully and seriously, he added, "I want to see you smiling when you come back"
This part is nicely done.

[Cry]
Man Yeong brought Yu Jin to the snowfield. He asked her to cry. No one could hear there. He left her there. He gave her appropriate privacy.
I don’t know if you have watched "Love Letter", a Japanese movie. This scene feels similar. Difference is that female lead shouted at the morning snowfield, "o genki desuka" repeatedly, loudly, to her boyfriend who died in a mountaineering accident. "o genki desuka" means "how are you".
When Man Yeong saw Sang Hyuk with Yu Jin, his face instantly sank. (I want to emphasize – instantly sank).

Man Yeong didn’t take alcohol, he drank only water, he is clear with himself, "I want to say. I want to say … I don’t want Yu Jin to go back to him. I want to hold her hand and say I love her. I hope to tell her these" (well, again, I believe he hasn’t said such things before)

[Attempted rape scene]
The most believable thing that Sang Hyuk has ever did.

[Saved]
Man Yeong called Yu Jin. She doesn’t know where she is. She is stationary and he arrived in short time. (Location finding is amazing)
Man Yeong touched Yu Jin’s sleeping face, his hand trembling, "Can I believe you like me? Can I?" (Well, again, I believe he hasn’t think about such things before)
Choi Lim clings onto Man Yeong, while Yu Jin stayed away. Things that are difficult to attain is often more precious...

[Alone]
Yu Jin, "When I am with Sang Hyuk, I’ll think of you. When I am with you, I’ll think of Sang Hyuk. I have decided to be alone" … Sang Hyuk, Man Yeong … but both not Joon Sang …
Man Yeong, "I can't help you. That is giving up." This is true as he is not Joon Sang.

[Polaris – You or Me?]
In the snowfield, Man Yeong he caught Yu Jin's hand, "If you can't decide, then hold on to me. I’ll be your direction"
Man Yeong, "I'll stand here. You wouldn’t be lost" (Man Yeong being her polaris)[Breakfast]
The breakfast he started, the fruits there, the milk waiting... but cooked by Yu Jin - very warm, very inviting, very tasty. The smell of soup... that's home ...

[You before me]
Man Yeong sent Yu Jin to the hospital. She left. He waited. He waited. He waited. He shifted his seat to look at the "polaris" on the inside top of his jeep, those created by Yu Jin. Waiting is terrible … especially when if you aren’t sure if there's an end … Knowing her kindness, she may not be able to come back to him after entering the hospital, but he still sent her there. It is an awful feeling that he has to let go, even in the knowledge that she may/could not come back...

[Departure]
Yu Jin said to Man Yeong, "I don’t want to apologise because you already have the most precious thing. Because you have occupied my entire heart. I don’t think I have let you down. I love you"
In our humble opinion, Yu Jin could be talking to Joon Sang at that moment.

[Realisation]
Man Yeong met Yu Jin at the pond, "I feel strange … If, I say, I say … (I am Joon Sang) …"
Quite annoying as the confession scene has been interrupted by Sang Hyuk's entrance.

[Yu Jin's love confession]
Yu Jin, "I was being asked, why I like Man Yeong … When I see Joon Sang, my heart felt as if it is being emptied. Although still beating, it has flown to Joon Sang. After Joon Sang died, I thought such feelings will never re-surfaced. After I spent some time with Man Yeong. Not only Man Yeong and Joon Sang look similar, although they are different identities, the feeling they give me is the same. Although strange, in my heart, Man Yeong is Joon Sang."
Man Yeong is Joon Sang, and has always been, in Yu Jin’s mind. This explains, more or less, why and how she could say, her confession to Man Yeong earlier.

[Man Yeong's confusion]
Man Yeong, "Did Joon Sang say that? I can't remember"
Man Yeong told the high school friends that he is Joon Sang. H/e, he said he is joking and left as Man Yeong.
Man Yeong asked Yu Jin, "Who am I? … Who am I?" (very sad)
It must be frustrating not to remember who one is … It is also confusing. All your life you think you are someone, then, suddenly, you are told that you are not... The worst part is: no one believes in you.[Man Yeong versus Joon Sang]
Yu Jin could give the long list of differences between Joon Sang and Man Yeong. When she sees Man Yeong does something, she will think what Joon Sang will do, compare, and that is why she does not need to think as she has already thought of it.
She can’t go to Man Yeong due to family objections.

[Exploring his past]
Joon Sang found Yu Jin's cheerful note
Joon Sang found the "first time" cassette tape and listened to it. Wanted to end it then but didn’t stop the tape from rolling.
Joon Sang started to tear. (Very sad.)

[Poem - the flight]
If my first love calls me, what should I do? … The answer has been clear all along as she has made her choice long time ago...
He lifted the piano cover. She closed it for him. Also, all those walking around in school … but did not meet … so near, yet so far...

[Airport]
A flashback of him wearing the shoes for Yu Jin. She arrived and called him. "You are Joon Sang, Joon Sang, right?" she almost fainted. "I daren’t call, daren’t cry your name. I am scare there'll be no answer."
She called him once like that, when she was drunk in his hotel room ...

[You are not Joon Sang]
Sang Hyuk, "If you can’t remember, then you are not Joon Sang"
"Yu Jin, Yu Jin … is this how I call you in the past?" I have lost our common memories. Thus, even if I am Joon Sang, I am just an empty shell. Joon Sang left.
That is why it is so important for him to remember who he is, and how it felt.

[Do not leave me again …]
Yu Jin, "I'll hold your hand. You must hold my hand too. Do you understand?"

[Joon Sang is back]
On waking up on the hospital bed, although weak, Joon Sang called, "Yu Jin, Yu Jin …" {this is how it feels like the past, this is how it sounds like the past, Joon Sang is back. Joon Sang is back. I cried, ran back and hold him …}

[Empty home]
Joon Sang, "When I was Man Yeong, I don't need a home. Now, it is different: finally, a place to settle down."
Joon Sang, "It's ok for a house to be empty. The best home is in each other's heart"
The atmosphere and such during the decoration process is warm. The handling of cushions from Joon Sang to Yu Jin … sweet …
Grocery shopping and "why are you buying so much?" etc ... felt very much married ... some warm scenes, beautifully captured …

[Recap]
Joon Sang wanted to remember. Yu Jin and Joon Sang went back the high school and re-act their past. He got most of the things wrong. He is sad for the inability to recall. He is only doing it more for Yu Jin than for himself.
By the pond, Joon Sang, "You remember me for ten years. But I can’t remember. I want to recall and be the Joon Sang in front of you." Yu Jin, "the past is memorable. But we can create memories now for the future, isn’t this better? No matter past or present, you are you. The one I love is the man in front of me now" Yu Jin is comforting Joon Sang.
If Man Yeong doesn’t look like Joon Sang, maybe Yu Jin wouldn’t notice him. Yu Jin likes the man within Joon Sang. Yu Jin tend to go for the inside, and hence, Man Yeong is trying extra hard to remember how it felt to be Joon Sang.

[Pink gloves]
Joon Sang suddenly recalled the gloves. He pulled Yu Jin to the old house, searched orderly for it. His face lighted up! Joon Sang is so happy.
While waiting at the streets, he remembered. They arranged to meet there 10 years ago. He remembered what he is going to say 10 years ago, "I love you".
Being remembered, a warm and nice feeling, indeed …
Feeling remembered ... Next episode, Yu Jin said, "I wanted to tell you that too."
Joon Sang suddenly recalled the gloves. He pulled Yu Jin to the old house, searched orderly for it. His face lighted up! Joon Sang is so happy.

Being remembered, a warm and nice feeling, indeed …
Feeling remembered ... Next episode, Yu Jin said, "I wanted to tell you that too."

[Joon Sang's Birthday]
Sang Hyuk, "I see the happiness on Yu Jin's face now that I never seen when she is with me. Take good care of Yu Jin, don’t make her sad, don’t let her cry …"
Sang Hyuk came. His senior came. Her senior came. The high school friends came. Joon Sang's happiness is written on the face. Happiness is something that can't be super-imposed.

[Walk]
Yu Jin told Joon Sang that before her parents were married, they did not have money. So, for them, dating was walking from one end of the town to another... small touches like these adds reality to a drama.

[Church]
They clapped loudly after watching the rehearsal. Being found out, their heads down and then laughed! (cute scene)
Yu Jin knelt down to pray. Joon Sang was still standing. Yu Jin urged him to pray. She prayed, just to say thank you to god for the day, happiness written all over her face.
Joon Sang, "I am in love with a woman. I hope to hold her hand. Be the father of her children. Be the warm hand of her and children. Be the strong legs of her and children. I love you" (and the polaris necklace).

[Studio]
Yu Jin, "What are we remembering?"
Joon Sang, "Now"! [the time to remember -"now", when we are together. For the future memories]
Joon Sang is quite childlike and lovable here.

[Went to see mum]
Yu Jin was so confident that her mum will agree, but she said no. Outside the door, they tried to comfort each other, telling each other that it is going to be fine, knowing that they are lying to each other...

[Siblings]
After Joon Sang found out the truth, he returned to the skiing field but did not see Yu Jin. Yu Jin walked around, and found him along at the snowfield.
She asked him whether something was wrong. He said what can be wrong when he know deep down inside that EVERYTHING is wrong. He told her that he was just cold and held on to her tightly as he could not bear the thought of losing her. That fear is very real, so real that he is not thinking logically...
Next morning, he suggested that they get married. Yu Jin was surprised, and mentioned that they need a witness. He said, "I am the witness"...
At the wedding, he asked for Heaven to forgive him for what he did. Sang Hyuk came to take Yu Jin away, he did not chase. His senior came in, asked him what happened. All he said was that he thought no one know. Later, outside Yu Jin's house, Joon Sang asked Sang Hyuk: please leave your eyes closed, and let us get away with it...
This whole scene was driven by the fear of losing her. It was so driven that he was not thinking about the consequences.

[Seaside]
Beautiful "moment". The dog is cute.
He left the room before kissing her. (very sad) All the struggle, all the pain he was carrying inside him at that point... Felt very real, IMHO, one of BYJ's best scene in WLS.
She pulled her out of the room. They squeezed at the front door. (sweet)
In the market, Joon Sang, knowing this is their last outing, "what do you want to do?" He is thrown into a panic when he found Yu Jin missing. Yu Jin, "I know you will come back for me …" (What can he say? How can he reply?)
It is supposed to be the last outing but then...
Joon Sang reminded Yu Jin a lot of things, even looking at her sleep … Joon Sang, "Don't look around too much as you will get lost... don’t always forget things … don't always say yes when someone ask you to do something..."

Joon Sang, clever as he is, should know he has lived in Yu Jin’s heart for 10 years. Even if he leaves now, he will still be alive in her heart. So, what is the point of leaving?
He tried hard to destroy all the physical memories - coin, camera, polaris necklace. Sequence: coin represents fate: He tossed the coin up, but did not look at the result before throwing it into the sea: fate cannot be cYeonged. Both sides are the same, because that is a special coin.
Photo represents memory. As fate cannot be cYeonged, so no point keeping the memories.
Polaris represents undying love. As they are not fated together, thus, there is no point keeping the polaris either.
He felt so weak that he fell.
For Joon Sang, who has to leave someone he loves, while alive, TWICE … how miserable that could be …

["Truth"?]
Joon Sang fainted after Yu Jin saw and left him in office.
Joon Sang woke up in the hospital, "why must I wake up?" (very depressing and that hurts)

["Impossible"/Dream House]
Yu Jin gave the "impossible" house model to Joon Sang.
Yu Jin, "I wanted to tell you that I am not ashamed of our love ... Don’t forget me. Don’t turn. Don’t leave your back view to me."
Joon Sang fainted in front of his father.
Joon Sang drew the drawings of the "impossible" house over night. He has decided to build it. "If I don’t draw it now, I may not have the chance in future." (Man Yeong said before, "what can I do for you? I will …")

[Final meeting]
Joon Sang, "I want to see you. Maybe there is no second chance again. First time I see you, you are beautiful. The most beautiful in the world."
Yu Jin, "Because I know you, hence, I know happiness"
Joon Sang, "Do this for me. Promise me. You must be happy, be happy. Remember to eat, remember to sleep. You must survive. We must not meet again. Let the memories by the seaside be our last set of happiness. We'll remember each other. Take care."

[Leaving]
Joon Sang to Sang Hyuk, "You have more time to accompany Yu Jin than me."
It is the usual question - quality versus quantity. Which is more important? Who to decide?

Section II: Questions

There are many questions about WLS, some on factual whilst others are on people's responses. Some doubts are listed:
1) Why didn’t Yu Jin attend Joon Sang’s funeral in Seoul?
2) Why is Choi Lim not curious about the identity of Man Yeong at all?
3) Why is Yu Jin exploring the ski resort with Man Yeong like the first time? Shouldn’t they submit a proposal before getting the job?
4) Why can they always "disappear" from work?
5) Why is the Man Yeong's old house not locked (with so many things inside)?
6) If Man Yeong’s mother really wanted to cover his memory (and everything), she wouldn’t have allowed Man Yeong to return to Korea after all. Isn’t that so?
7) How can Joon Sang/Man Yeong forgive his mother for excYeonging his memory?
8) How can he sign off as Lee Man Yeong after knowing that is a fake identity?
9) Why Yu Jin didn’t go to NY, before Joon Sang's operation?
10) Why didn’t Joon Sang approach Yu Jin?
11) Why do Joon Sang still need glasses in the dream house (the end)?
12) Why did Joon Sang turn back in the dream house ("my love is calling me"?)?

Section III: Similarities

With "Purity", it is not too dramatic, quite daily, simple. That is the attraction...
With "Autumn", comes the new young faces, OST, scenery, drama, … touching but not overly realistic.
With "WLS", this is simply beautiful ... Some similarities between "Purity", "Autumn" and "WLS":

[All three]
• Senior actors - almost same for three productions (mix and match)
• Family objections
• 4 main cast
• centre is always a lady - "Hui Zhen", "Enxi" and "Yu Jin"
• Little boy/girl chasing the vehicle (one of them is being taken away): same scene, different emotion. For "Purity", it is childhood innocence. For "Autumn", it is the separation of a family member. For "WLS", even though it is not car chase, Joon Sang was knocked down by a car. The feeling of lost is more sudden, and unexpected, than the other two.
• Someone who is "noble"

["Purity" and "Autumn"]
• Village scenes – should be the same village
• Friendship between 2 male leads

["Autumn" and "WLS"]
• Back seats (on bus)
• Actual re-meeting after the engagement party (for the main leads)
• Fiance main male/female lead didn’t love
• Dying because you leave me
• Knocked down by truck – Junxi and Joon Sang

["Purity" and "WLS"]
• Lying mothers, both artists (pianist vs painter)
• "Yes-and-no" brother sister relationship
• First love
• The night in the small room: different things happened but the location is similiar
• "Happy ending"

Section IV: After thoughts

The first love between Joon Sang and Yu Jin is short, beautiful, innocent and thus most memorable. He saved her from the hooligan. They both can’t contact their fathers to redeem them at the police station. They skipped class … Actually, it was Joon Sang idea. Yu Jin followed. Next day, they got yelled by the teacher, who said that is Joon Sang's bad influence. Yu Jin defended Joon Sang: I went out on my own freewill…
They arranged to meet … Joon Sang had the accident … Joon Sang left when Yu Jin love him most, when he is on his way to meet her. If Joon Sang didn’t have the accident then (when he is on the way to meet Yu Jin), will his "death" have such a deep impact on Yu Jin? She loves him and he left when she realises her love for him, but some guilt is there too, we suspect.
WLS emphasises on "first love" as well as "if your first love is calling you, what will you do?" Yu Jin's choice is obvious. Sang Hyuk's choice is obvious. Choi Lim's choice is obvious. Other than being in love, much earlier generation matters entered the picture and resulted in much confusions, complications and heartaches.

Haze, "Let me ask this question, if your first love is calling you, what will you do?"

TT, "Well, this question depends on the person. It has been reported that one of the most search item by females on the internet is information/whereabouts is about their first love. In particular, for people in an unhappy marriage, often they fantasize about first love. That is in fact WLS's major selling point."
BYJ is good in WLS, e.g. his face lighting up, body language … It is a pity that his character is not overly convincing in the end. Well, his golden crown does look a bit funny at times.

Haze, "In the front episodes, Joon Sang is memorable. His chuckles, thinking looks, … BYJ helped me through the last few episodes of WLS. His voice is attractive although I don’t understand what he is talking about."

TT, "CJW does not look as compatible (compared to SYA) with BYJ but her portrait of Yu Jin is excellent: alive but living in the past, all the pain she carried but no one to share with, decided to marry someone that she has not much feeling so that she can move on to the next stage in life, the confusion of getting caught with 2 men, the way she thinks and the courage to face her fate, her honesty (most of the time)... like the inner strength she possess. I started to watch WLS because of BYJ, end up finding the drama worth watching because of CJW..."

Overall …

TT: From the beginning to the end, Joon Sang is the only person Yu Jin really loves. Then, she is caught between Sang Hyuk who is unbelievably nice, and everyone around them expected them to get married. Next, Man Yeong came along, looking like Joon Sang, who also treated her nicely. In Yu Jin’s heart, no matter what, is always, and will always go back to Joon Sang.
The feeling of missing someone over such a long period, hoping that it will go away one day but with time, it did not... is painful...Hence, some of the things Yu Jin did to Sang Hyuk is understandable. The high school scenes and the various household scenes are realistic. Many scenes are well-planned, beautifully done, and poetic....
But then, I don't find WLS a great drama. It started off great but the last few episode dragged for too long. All through the drama, there are too many questions. I have given up on asking the factual questions, as it is not possible to answer them based on the script. My questions are more related to peoples’ responses when something happened. Most people in WLS are too forgiving, so forgiving that they cannot be real. On top of that, peoples’ behaviour is often inconsistent. Just when you start to sympathize with the character, then, something will happen to "pull" you away from it, reminding you that that is a drama. There is a general lack of depth about the story as everyone is preoccupied with their first love and seems that nothing else in life is important... That is just my opinion.

Haze: After almost 20 hours of intensive watching, I completed WLS. Then, my head ached. That could be because I have packed everything together. I have hesitated … then anticipated to watch "WLS" although I already knew part of the story. WLS OST draws my attention, up till now. After WLS, some tracks sound much familiar.
Certain items/scenes caught my attention: "high school"; polaris; "puzzle"; "winter house"; "Yu Jin’s confession"; "Joon Sang is back"; "empty home"; "pink gloves"… the feeling about "lost and found" is comforting.
Picturesque, with breath-catching scenery, competent cast, brilliant OST, … WLS is delicate and most beautifully shot. Some scenes are memorable. Like a magnet, it pulls me on … until the back, it quite irritates me due to the much inconsistencies (entrance of Joon Sang’s mother and my logic sense). With respect to WLS, there are still much hazy regions in my mind.
WLS seems like a beautiful "net", which one will seep through the "holes" if we aren't tolerant (or believe) enough. The dilemma is I don’t feel much for WLS, or at least below the level I thought I could and would be.
