He is one of the biggest stars today........

If you ask .......then how did I not notice him earlier........or even heard of him particularly mentioned........

Dear Recca,

This should be fine to talk bout Alec ...........

Did you know he wrote a book?..........

My days in Jian Zhong".........is about his time in Jian Zhong School

Its a charming and warm story.........of a boy and the pressures of school life......

He was came in 1st 2nd or 3rd at National level for that year's University Entrance exam.

How he'd try to keep awake in classes.............
and master the art of sleeping with his eyes open........
as well as be able to sleep in any position............

the muggings .......the study centres........and the pretty girls who manns it often gives him "privilages"......by not allowing his fans to disturb him when he is trying to study....
Startled to discover a bunch of giggling school girls surrounding his table......
(You see.............he has this "booth"....somthing like a table with a curtain around it ...........and when the geeky bespecticled Alec suddenly opened the curtain to get some tea........!!! 0 !!!)

Actually if you understood his story.........
you can appreciate his songs so much better......

because his songs......are really a reflection of him........

He has a great emotive voice.........one of the reasons is.......these are his songs..........he feels for them.......

He found fame at a very young age............

the life of a teen star was very giddy.........but he was quite level headed bout it.....

when he lost his girl friend............

he was so crushed..........he went on a huge rampage and simply self destructed......

almost every stage of life tat a young person has gone thru....

was reflected in his songs........
especially in that one solo album "Jo"........(WALK in Mandarin).after he came back........

Little Tigers' great hit "Red Dragonfly" was a favourite......

Till I heard the Japanese original sung by Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi and SMAP on a SMAP x SMAP........
Whereas Little Tigers' version was a happy and bouncy Teeeny version.
SMAP's version was one that brings out the spirit of brotherhood......there was this very spontaneuse male bonding between and SMAP and Nagauchi that one seldom see on TV in a long time.......

Recca........learn Mandarin......

this is one of the most intersting journey you can enocunter in your quest for mastery of Mandarin.

Now listening to his 4th solo album.......

"Shang Ko".......that means "wound"........

His richness.............and his feelings...............still evident in that recording..........

I think...........there is this sincerity about him that is so endearing......

At a different time and place..........

at a time of heartbreak and pain............these songs will be a great solace...............

I am simply "boiling over" in happiness.........what with my family and friends..........BYJ coming and all.............

This is the one of those "in a nutshell" pieces of Love of the Aegean Seas........(as posted in SYP.com).....

Alec put in a lot of thoughts and feelings............into this character of Lu En Qi.........

as Alec uses his "Xin"(heart) to reach out to you as En Qi......

You have to use your "Xin"(heart) to listen........

This role so well portrayed..........incredibly sensitive.........
really a fantastic performance.
(that is not because I am a fan..............)

Because......alot of this character is never verbalises.............
At times Lu En Qi can come off as a weak........and insufferable.......
However, nothing is as it seems on the surface..............

I will attempt to let you understand............the real Lu En Qi.......

The character of Lu En Qi.............

The very accomplished and multi-talented Lu En Qi ..........

He is like a princeling,
Locked up in his ivory tower, every step of his education is carefully planned and mapped out for him, schooled........all the way till there wasn''t any more to go.............

Nothing is never left to chance.
Including choosing a suitable bride for him.
A prince can only marry a princess.
He is made to feel a moral obligation to DUTY,

Duty as a son,
Duty to take his place in society.
His position in the circle of the rich and the powerful.

With his impeccable upbringing, his resentment was suppressed........
The unspoken resentment simmering............

Learning to wear a suitable social "mask".........for right social occasion.
His circle of friends carefully screened...

His instincts finely trained and honed.........he was taught.......not to trust..........or take people at their words..............but use his own judgment,

He was taught...........how deal with people and to weigh the situation from a broader perspective..............

In other words..........he was groomed for "greater things".

He learnt.......that everything was "meant for his good".
The high hopes and expectancy of his mother cannot be undermined in any way,
She devoted her life preparing him for this...........
He cannot fail her.
Its to his credit tat he had lived up to her expectations and has yet to fail her.

Above all, he understood his mother.

A fabulous socialite, his mother is just as accomplished, in society or the boardroom. She sees herself as a "mover of things".........daring, manipulative, in control.
Elegant and refined, she groomed him in her own mould.

His father tells of............how beautiful he was as a child..........so bright and intelligent...........he was simply perfect.......

En Qi once "gave her a lesson in life"..............it is with pride and realisation that her son has indeed grown up to be the person she envisioned and had so painstakingly groomed.

En Qi learnt to accept his lot in life ~ Living in a gilded cage.
He longed for freedom.
He no longer smiles..........
He never smiles.............
He wears a mask all the time...............courteous, always charming, distant, cool..........
The only physical sign of rebellion was............one button.........
He opened one shirt button more than permitted.

The one person............who could read him .........was his beloved Xiao Tong..............
She could understand him so well..........

So well.............he could never lie to her...............
It was with the greatest effort..............on his part..........to play out the role he needed to do ..............
to convince her.......to forget him.
Even that ...............was so hard..............he could not look her in the eye......nor linger too long in her presence...........without loosing his lines or composure........
He could only...........seek to attack her so vilely..........to make her cry..........to totally dishonour her..........

Once a decision is made, he does everything in accord.

Sometimes we find it very hard to accept how he can..........in that moment............. lie so blatantly. He will find the right words to say.............. things that people wants to hear ..............

His thoughtfulness and diplomacy is fantastic...........
A hundred and one ways of doing something..............he will always chose the most considerate.............

At critical times,.............you will see En Qi being besieged from so many sectors.............everyone wants a piece of him...............everyone needed to comforted.................
There are things that needed to be done................

He''s like Superman.
He resoluteness.....................his strength.................his sacrifice...............
He bore with the greatest fortitude..........

In the beginning.......

The first meetings............... taking an instant photo at the Island...........

The Vendor gives them the photo........

they admired it..........and Xiao Tong.......just tells him to "keep it with him"....

That look on his face......surprised......secretly pleased.........then a little hesitant.......to take it........unused to such generosity........

She tot no more of it.......

seeing her guilelessness..........accepted it ...........
In his heart.......he had received more than just a photo.....

He asked only to be with the one he loves...........
You remember.....................his very simple..........because I love you.''
You see him smelling her hair..................
You see them making music together.............being together........

Someone once sang.........."What a difference a day makes...."

After that fateful day,.................his whole world seems to have collapsed.........

Very heart wrenching...........
To see how En Qi is bearing up........standing at the narrow corridors...
(He''s always lurking in corridors!!)

Phone rang........its Yao Xiang............telling him His Xiao Tong is suffering.....on his account..........

En Qi..........his body shaking .....sobbing uncontrollably.......cries silently..........not daring to let him know .....outcome of his fight for love and freedom.....
like a bird that was shot down, his wings clipped......he lies mortally wounded........and bleeding.......

He drags himself to his bedroom..................and falls on his knees.........
beside the bed..........
and lies there.............."This cannot be happening!"

Longing for the comfort of her loving arms............
Longing to hold her......and never ever letting go..........

Knowing.............its the end....and he will never see her or hold her again...

A part of him just died.........just like his piano...................he locked up his heart.............and closed that chapter of his life

He became a man without a heart .............
Cold..............devoid of feelings..............existing.......
Channeling all his energies to only work...........
He worked himself into a frenzy.............

Outside of that...............any other demands on his person will be a non-chalant "as you wish"....................
Its also entirely plausible, that proceeding with the wedding will see a "perfect bridegroom in En Qi"...............

Everyone was happy again in their "perfect world".........
You realise just how cold the world became........when En Qi stopped being happy....................

BUT FATE was not thru with this pair of lovers............
they were destined to meet again.........

His heart stopped.............when he realised it was her...."It can''t be!"

With shock............he watched her walk toward him.........totally unaware of his presence.................

The ghost of the En Qi of 3 years ago awakens........
his eyes following her every move..........

as the Monster of the present En Qi lies dormant ...........during this magical interlude...

His eyes lighting up...........drinking in the sight of her.......

The chains that bound all his feelings all this time..... slackens....
as he allowed the music to carry him............
brings up all the suppressed feeling of the past 3 years..........

He marveled at how she handled herself............she''s beautiful as he had remembered..........and there was a new found poise and confidence.............

Her fluster at the first sight of him............

Like the beacon...........the twinkling notes of their song.......
guided their hearts once again.....
awash with the memories of their love.......

En Qi fought back his tears.........

He was not free to choose...............just like before.........
with his "princess" beside him..............
He had to wear a mask..........

It was heartwarming to see a second chance at happiness...........

To see this "Superman" in that awful green apron.............making dinner.......(like we said "He''s very accomplished" ), just because could not bear to let her to use her hands to prepare dinner.......

The same one drawing "hearts" all over the place.........especially on the palm of his beloved..........

The one who plays the piano so beautifully once again..........the one who speaks thru music.............

(its almost a sideline that he''s also a corporate giant........signing million dollar deals)

The same corporate giant...............who takes to the streets..............sincerely asking for signatures.......from total strangers...........
To create...¨A Ten-Thousand blessing" for her.
Trying desperately to heal her........
after his mother''s monstrous attempt on her.......
leaving her a shell of her former life..........robbed of her gifts and spirit........

You remembered...............once upon a time, this beautiful smile on his face.............as he watched her sleep...........one morning on the "Isle of Freedom"..........Santorini
only to have it disappear as he realise sadly "it can never be with her".........

They have come........ so far......................

passed life and death...............

Its slow in some parts...........but it''s a complete story...........

Yao Xiang''s family life is also colourful...............
it was so touching..............when he realised it was too late to tell his father........He''d be a good boy and eat his noodles while it hot...

It contrasts the heavens and earth between En Qi and Yao Xiang.......
One who is so rich...........and the other so improvised.....

The warmth of Yao Xiang''s hovel..........the cool elegance of En Qi house.........becomes cold......

Some home truths.........that only a gutter-rat Yao Xiang will utter......tells you He''s honest:

"Skills?..........First.......no money.........second.........no choice........third...the car''s gone kaput!!.......
with options like these..........I''d better know how to fix it"

.......on being asked if he could fix the car........after he volunteered to fix it.........

After a while..............you begin to think ............its really the other way round........... tat the rich guy is poor and...........the poor guy is infact "very rich".....

It deals with emotions.........needs.......and demands.........

Each person''s emotions, needs and demands........

Everyone pays a price..........for something..........in the end.......

En Qi''s paid ...............

Xiao Tong and his mother paid ...........for the rest of their lives.............

as does Yi Qian .............

all because they love the beautiful En Qi..............

Almost forgot..........being so involved with character analysis of Lu En Qi.

Lu En Qi character....is very hard to portray.............
because he does not have alot of lines..
However....... He is the most complex character there....

This one requires "Nei Xin Si" (acting from within).....

It requires alot of body language and eyes that speaks........

The real reason why I enjoyed it so much was...............
because I am able to read this character.

Alec''s portrayal is complete and has depth...........
The job of the actor is to let the audience SEE the character....
He did an excellent job.

as someone commented "hey......Alec Su is surprisingly good in this one"

I need to say that...........this is a good role for an actor......
and Alec really fleshed this one out properly.

You must "think a little deeper" when you watch this drama....
its not a "no-brainer"....romance.......
the plot and story flows really naturally............and unfolds dramatically........tho sometimes it meanders..........

Alec lives and breathes Lu En Qi...................

Think! think!.............

comments like.........."er.....Alec.....did not do the CPR properly.."

A perfectionist like Alec.......would have thought thru exactly what he is doing..............

Scene:

By the lake...............

after hauling Xiao Tong out of the water..............

"This is bad"......Lee Li was saying..........

He just spat at her................angry (not at her, but just angry) ........she MUST NOT DIE!..

but..............feeling for signs of life....on Xiao Tong....
sent a cold fear thru him......

She is not breathing!..........

This cannot be...........she cannot die..........I can''t watch her die ........

His mind going into overload.......

a part of him...........still in control..........telling him exactly what to do....as he remembered the instructions to perform CPR......

OK...OK....CPR....CPR.....OK.....clasped hand.........and apply pressure to the heart area.....

*clasped hand.......realise that it should be clasped one over the other instead........quickly changed position and applied pressure....One Two....one two........*

Ensure a clear air passage to apply mouth to mouth resuscitation
..

*tries to ensure air passage.........but shaking too much .(after jumping into the water earlier)....and desperately........trying to resuscitate her...*

Listen for any signs of life............before repeating the above steps again.........

*listens.......(heart in his mouth).......no signs of life..*

*starts to repeat the procedures..................clasped his hand....again he got it wrong .....and had to switch........and applied pressure to her chest*

before "slobbering" over her again.............

slobbering?..........that''s because he''s so frightened......he''s starting to sob............so afraid he would lose her again..........this time, he was not leaving her........she was leaving him!.........

Please wake up.....please ..........

End of scene.

So you see........................
just how meticulous ........is Alec in this performance..........

Take a bow Alec.

If you look at the storyline.........this connection.........is always there........
The contrast...........between the 2 men........
one who loves truly...............and the one who gives his all.........for the one he loves..........

The message of Plato''s Eternity is runs thru both of them..............
The storyline is consistant with this theme.......
The lyrics of the theme and love songs...........are also very appropriate.........

THE MUSIC!!!!

The final scene.............
was "You are my teardrop"..............right there and then............its meaning becomes patently clear..........

When En Qi left his "heart" bracelet for her.............
the song Plato'' eternity was sweepingly beautiful...........and appropriate...
Its the first time..........you get to listen to Alec sing the verse.....softly......

"in my dreams.........I see you......
I discover........I am in the oceans........
I reach out to you.......

I find myself sinking to the bottom........

3000 miles................stand between us.........

I will....... exchange for being with you.................. lie in deep slumber in the deepest part of the oceans"

This drama was really enhanced by the OST...............

The music for the time when En Qi tell her...............Yao Xiang will see the sunrise in the morning...........

is the same piece they used when En Qi tells her...........to let Yao Xiang take care of her......in his place.................

it made it even more touching.........

Oh Daybee,

Alec is in his COMEBACK career as an ACTOR in Huan Zhu Ke Ke....
after a hugely successful singing career that came to a screeching halt
after going solo.......

He was a very popular SINGER........part of the Little Tigers of Taiwan
other little Tiger also inside Huan Zhu Ke ke....is the younger son of the Minister......the one who looked like dark faced Leslie Cheung.

Little Tigers was THE Taiwan Boyband.........
in a class that even surpass F4......they ALL can sing.
but they disbanded after several years on TOP......the other member was Nikki WU.

Nikki was the babe magnet.........super cool.......and unapproacabable..

Tommy (as Alec was know as) is the "Goody Tiger"..........being a first class scholar and all round boy-next-door.........was approved by all mothers .............and all their teenaged daughters allowed to worship him.....

Benny........was the very very quiet and shy one with alot mystic........
so little was know of him........that was his DRAW......

that was the wave of the Little Tigers......who was "born" same time as SMAP.........

their songs was reflective of the energy of youth.......
both appealing, full of hope......and freshness......

(I missed that era completely actually..............
only discovered it much later)

OH Daybee.......

just to let you know...........all the Taiwanese actors in that HZKK series had their voices dubbed over........

because their speaking voices will not be able to compliment the China Actors' original lilting Beijing voices........

But Alec has a deep singing voice..........

er.....Recca....

For HZKK........Alec was definately dubbed. Period.
It was never released with his original voice.
It will not be able to match the other actors in the drama.

However in alot of his other dramas....he was not dubbed over.
I particularly liked "Cousin Ji Siang' where he played dual roles.....

Hmm...........Alec was a successful singer/bon fide teen Idol by the time he was 15 years old.........had a great run for several years(bout 5years)......before they disbanded.......
combining Singing and studying for a place in the University.
He dropped out....after almost 2 years in the U......burned out be the twin stress of being a Teen Idol and undergrad.

Meanwhile.......he fell in love and ......his career got in the way........
he did not spend enough time on the relationship..........she chose his classmate over him.

He took it so badly.............he went over the binge.........
He dropped both U and his singing career.....
and flew to London to get over it..........6 months without any communications with anyone....

Officially......his agency gave out as "He went overseas for studies"

When he came back........
he released his 5 album.............
that saw a redical change in him............
a very candid journey was recorded inside that......
One of my favourite albums......
alot of feelings..........was encapsuled........and beautifully rendered into songs........

Alec really can communicate thru his songs.......

After that alot of things happened.........and he solwly disappeard from the scene.......
Several years of obscurity..........

He grit his teeth and.......decided that he does not have anything to loose .......and tried his hand at acting..........

He landed several movie roles........
One of them required a bed scene........Right!.....(he did it,but it was not quite what you think it is....)
The interview thereafter........he confessed.........he had no real feelings bout it because it was too damn freezing cold filming it.......

The other was an period piece role........(gawd that was awful)

Sounds like BYJ huh? *laugh* Bedscenes and period roles.

Finally he commited himself to HZKK.........

He did not have high hopes for it because the cast was all unknown...
with only the reknown Writer and himself was the biggest name in the cast.

Immediately after that he did "Cousin Ji Siang"......

THAN..........a little later HZKK was broadcast.......and became a huge hit.......

THAT revived his career.........This is his second career....
But Singing remained his first love.

After doing dramas for several years to broaden his popularity......he went back to singing......

Singapore was a familiar place for Alec...........because he was here before...............He seems to have very good contacts in Singapore....
Ricky Ho, his producer from his solo days is from Singapore.....

So when Alec released his first album after becoming an actor........
he had a whole new generation of fans from the HZKK fan base.........

And the promotions for him was like he had the backing of Mediacorp in his backpocket...........

He had a mini-concert............right here in the TV studio!.......
for his fans...........recorded and thereafter telecasted..........
(now...........very very few singers local or overseas ever get to do that )

He landed a guest spot in the first season of a popular annual TV variety show........just like that..........

He must have a godfather in Mediacorp.......or something......
they really paved a red carpet for him........

Physically...........he is very thin........slight built............
Very approachable.............
very little airs .........polite...........and a little playful
a genuine person...........just like the boy next door........
still a little shy of strangers.........easily startled........
and getting used to being mobbed by screaming girls..........once again......

Now that you mention it........yes a little......and they both love "rock and roll"....

Alec was actually rather sweet in those days........

But he's still looked SO YOUNG.......
He goes round telling everyone........."Please..I've grown up....I'm not that innoncent........OK?........and do resist the urge to pat my head"

He worried about permantly going bald.........after he had to shave his head for HZKK1 & 2.......and for 2 years he was BALD.....
he refused to do to do a third.......because a "rock & roll" singer should have hair!!....

The writer Chung Yao favoured him hugely........and always let him have his way.............

He did throw tantrums due to the heavy workload and DID runaway from the set more than once..........filming in China was a gruelling experience..
especially when he is very prone to food posioning......

Reason: He had other commitments and the QSSYMM schedule refused to released him despite having secured a leave of absence on the onset.....

The first time.............he offered a rose and an abject apology....so he was forgiven........
(Forgiven because he apologised. But he was actually working on another project during that few days..)

The second time was HUGE.........
He fell off his horse filming.........and was injured.......but he continued filming .........

His managers got wind of this inident and decided to use it to secure some time off from the filming to do his other project :
They created a media storm........."Alec Su fell off his horse, in deep coma, serious brain damage feared"

Far away in inner China.... at the film site.......everyone was unaware of "this storm" coming their way........
Alec was injured..........but not "in a coma"......and he would not be able to continue in his condition because his arm needed a cast ..........

So.........the Media storm enable ALEC and Manager to whisk him off to TAIWAN for further medical attention and COMPLET REST.
So he "rested" for a week 'quietly".......

In reality.........he was in the recording studio......at all hours......recording for his first album for the first time in years...

It incurred the warth of Chung Yao....who was furious.......she wanted to cut him off immediately.........

It took alot of intervention to get Chung Yao to forgive him...
She did later.........
It was not entirely his fault.......
as the media storm was not his idea in the first place....
but he did go along with it.........she did not like the deceit.
It was really a scheduling problem.

I actually liked HZKK......because its a very FUN pacey compact drama......

HZKk2 is the sequel which is alot longer.........a little draggy...more serious.......

Cousin Ji Siang is a nice little romantic drama......
very low budget tho.......little glitz.......but you see alot of the real Alec inside that one......he basically played himeself.....
but there is a real twist in that tragic tale.....a story within a story....
a little surreal because the actors were going in and out of reality.....

He fell in love with Vickki Zhou at that time.......
He grew up in the public eye.

After his first failed relationship.........this was his blazingly second public romance and it was hard for a romacce to survive the pressure of public interest.

They both obviously has great screen chemistry, they were rather close......having to work together for 1, 2 ,3 and 4 series together.......

But by the 4th series.........he could not take it anymore.........
and it was arranged that he "not partner" her in the "Romance in the Rain"
He got "set up" with Ruby Lin for that......(she played his half sister in HZKK1 & 2!!) .

We believe that he was serious about her.
It was also because they were thrown together for so much of the time
it was a natural development........

She was very lively and open , the very quiet and serious Alec was kinda drawn to that .............

He never really wanted to talk bout it.........

Well what ever it was.........the screen chemistry was sparkling whenever they are together.

This was most evident in Cousin Ji Siang.
