Why this drama?

contributed by Peggy (email: exrafbrad@cox.net) I am most pleased to find this great site. This is one of the best among those that I have ever come across. I really appreciate your English layout of the twenty episodes. Some of the contributions here do echo my own reasons for my enjoyment of 'Hotelier'. I am English and do not know any Asian languages but I watch all the Asian dramas. I got hooked about three years ago and now watch them all the time. In particular, I am addicted to Korean dramas and their news programs and variety shows. Among them, 'Hotelier' is my favourite. When 'Hotelier' began it was as if the sun started to really shine and Bae Yong Jun took over as the most interesting actor I have seen. He is good looking which helps but his acting is so controlled in a very natural way for the character of Frank Shin. Frank Shin is so within himself and hard as nails as a head hunter and corporate takeover executive. As the story unfolds, BYJ gradually begins to show he is capable of deep human emotions after meeting a woman who somehow gets under his skin. After that all the other people in the drama begin to emerge and their stories become more than the background support. One really becomes anxious about all of them. This is a well-acted and well-directed drama. The settings in and around the luxurious hotel are perfect. I love everything about "Hotelier" with one exception. The ending was too brief and set in the wrong place for my taste. Surely it could have been more romantic - not a hotel lobby. I know the Koreans keep their feelings hidden in public which is why I would have placed the couple in love in a place like the Diamond Suite where they first danced together. Then we could have had a satisfying embrace and joyful re-union - maybe a kiss. After all they had been apart for at least three or four months. I still have not completely gone through all of your lovely site. My eyes get tired. However, chronological age is immaterial when watching a romantic story! I wish "Hotelier" would be available in DVD with English subtitles. I have watched it with the actors voices speaking Korean, which is good. Also with Mandarin dubbing but then the voices cannot ring true and that is needed especially with the expressive BYJ voice. I cannot imagine this drama with any other cast. They are all too good. To the cast and director - Kahm Sahm nidah. |
