Here
I am, sitting behind my PC reading Hotelier fans' contributions from all
over the world. Suddenly, a weird sense of pride swells up in me! Isn't
it amazing what a drama and the Internet did to us? Somehow, we are all
connected by a simple notion - a blind, silly, yet innocent passion for
Hotelier/BYJ/K-dramas. Ever wondered what life will be without Hotelier?
Well, for one, the Earth will still rotate, we will go on with our daily
lives but gosh, what precious things we would have missed out! And I wouldn't
be sitting here writing my thoughts too... : )
Part
A: What would all of you say are the top gains of your encounter with
Hotelier and other K-dramas?
1. Ching gus (Friends!)
Yes, a good
drama like Hotelier will stay in our hearts for a long time to come...
and to me, more tangibly, is that we've knew so many good friends from
the Net via Hotelier/K-dramas! Who says danger lurks in the cyberspace?
Great friendship is in abundance too! Having ching gus who share the same
interest is a precious gain for me! I recalled the fun times when my friend
and I went up to KL to look for "Frank Shin" and our other onnis!
What fun we had drinking our martinis and re-enacting the scene of Junsang
holding Eu Jin's hand on the fallen treelog (Well, we acted by the road
kerb! Haa~~)! Frank Shin was definitely with us that night, a toast to
Frank!
2. PC Idiot to IT Expert (almost...)
Somehow, in order to catch a few more glimpses of BYJ/Frank Shin, we finally
overcome our techno-phobia! Since my "fatal" encounter with
Hotelier in Oct 2001, I've learnt so much about downloading and burning
stuff, finally chucking my old PC for a Pentium 4. See, where else on
earth would our motivation come from?! Also heard that my friend's mother
actually called her during office hours asking my friend to teach her
how to operate the VCD player over the phone because she wanted to watch
Frank Shin again! Haaa, BYJ had claimed yet another victim!
3. Linguistic expert!
Being a typical Singaporean, I am "paiseh" (meaning embarrassed)
to admit that I speak better Singlish (refers to the local blend of English,
i.e. English mixed with Chinese and local dialects) than proper English
and Chinese. Imagine that we are now also interested to learn yet another
new language - Korean! Somehow, all of a sudden, we are quick to pick
up phrases from the dramas, from oppa, onni, dong saeng to kamsahamnida,
sarang he yo and ki da ril ke yo! Btw, my friend just called me mad when
I answered her call with "yobo seyo"! She thought I had gone
mad! But hey, we are just putting to practice what we have learnt, right!
And of a sudden, our CD racks are full with Korean dramas' OSTs, MVs,
NG scenes, burned compilations...
Part B: What's your favourite
Hotelier scene?
At this present moment, the image that came to my mind was of Frank
meeting his father at Dong-Hai. Of all the relationships in the world,
kinship is what I myself consider as one of the most important. I recalled
seeing Frank, not as a grown-up man, but as a little boy, his face wearing
a mask, yet his heart full of confusion, hurt, hope and excitement....
in the hope of seeing his father again. This really striked me hard....
No matter how successful you are in life, you only want to be your parents'
child... Or no matter how bad you become, you will always be your parents'
little boy/girl... My heart twisted at seeing Frank's tears... a hunter's
tears... I recalled in the Chinese novel of Hotelier pg. 7, there is a
line which I personally like very much, "We can disregard the wound,
but it does not mean the wound does not exists..."
Yes, we can't let go of Hotelier now.... we have come too far!
